Despite – or perhaps precisely because of – these turbulent times, the concert offered courage to embrace utopia! How can we dream again? What will the day after tomorrow sound like? What makes our hearts beat? These were the questions explored in the world premiere of the Third ‘Social Symphony’, which formed the highlight of the 2026 TONALi Festival at the Elbphilharmonie.
Spanning five movements, the third ‘Social Symphony’ offered answers brimming with a mysterious sense of security, bold surprises and original imagination: musicians and audience alike experience an unforgettable concert together, in which music, space and all those involved resonate with one another. What happens on stage begins weeks beforehand in the city: in numerous small encounters in a ‘slow-dating’ format, people from Hamburg come together – from ‘I’ to ‘you’ to ‘us’!
The ‘Social Symphony’ is curated by Franziska Ritter and Christian Siegmund (1:CONCERTS). Together with the asambura ensemble, students from the TONALi Stage Academy, young people from the TONALi Audience Academy and artists from the city, we explored how many small moments of connection can give rise to a great sense of togetherness – a Social Symphony.
